her ex husband, Keely wakes up chained to a bed in a basement A pro life group kidnapped her to prevent her from getting an abortion, planning to hold her until shortly before she s due to give birth Her warden is Du, an older woman and fanatical anti choice supporter. The concept is terrifying being held against one s will by a group of zealots is the stuff of nightmares And given some of the lengths anti choice groups will go to prevent abortions combined with their treatment of pregnant women as non entities the concept doesn t feel nearly as ridiculous and unrealistic as it should. But the play s overly loud drumbeat regarding abortion rights gives the whole play the feeling of a strident lecture The people most likely to see the play likely already agree with the playwright, which begs the question what, exactly, is the point of such an overly political play if it simply preaches to the choir While reading, I kept thinking Ms Martin would have been well served by borrowing from some classic science fiction the highbrow stuff namely, taking modern issues and putting them into a different situation to examine them without the baggage Yes, abortion is unique, but I think the play could have had a stronger punch and attracted a wider audience if it had focused on the story and the underlying message rather than the issue Quasi recommended This book deals with the conflict husband Her child is a daily reminder of her attack, and she wants an abortion because she doesn t want the baby to come into the world being hated by its mother The play deals with themes such as religion, abortion, sexual assault, generational differences in opinion, and morality. This book is definitely for someone who either has strong opinions on abortion, or is curious to learnon people s stances on the topic While I personally enjoyed reading this script, this play is definitely geared towards adults I say this because of the content and the pacing of the piece Certain scenes seem to drag and felt unnecessary, especially towards the beginning of the play That was one of the issues that I had with this piece I also hated both Keely and Du in the beginning of the play, which may not happen to everyone I was annoyed by both characters because they seemed to exhibit the extremes of both sides in the discussion of abortion Keely seemed to whiny, and Du seemed almost apathetic because she was so invested in holding Keely captive to protect a baby that she never cared about I would give this play a 3.75 5 This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, the play, but I understand why I was drawn to it I used to think the best were issue dramas, concept plays, and this is one for sure a woman is kidnapped by Operation Retrieval from a clinic before her abortion procedure, and confined for months to prevent her from going back.I think I waited so lo I remember buying this at Shakespeare Co something like 8 years ago, and there was a kitty cat to read it, though, because some ideas lose everything the minute you put a lot of words to them How could this idea be sustained for a play How could it possibly end But it gained some traction and the longer scenes occasionally blossomed The scene on Keely s birthday was very kind In the end, it did manage to surprise me.The coat hanger was good
