!Read Pdf × Purgatory (The Terra Australis Incognita) Ý An epic horror story It has an historical theme, the real attempt byth century Spanish explorers to discover the Terra Australis Incognita, King Solomon s mines and the secret of eternal youth The protagonist, an amnesia victim, is coerced into astral travel experiments that propell him into the past He experiences a tremendous adventure, witnessing an alchemist explorer s quest that takes us from Spain to the Americas before crossing the Pacific to the Islands of Solomon And while our astral travelling hero witnesses all of this, he himself discovers the secret of his own true identity Purgatory isthan just a novel this amazing, exhilarating, accelerating journey is backed by comprehensive research bringing historical details the quest of sixteenth century alchemist Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa a real person, as are most of the historical references , across the Atlantic to the colonies in Mexico and Peru, from whence he traverses the Pacific, seeking the Terra Australis Incognita and the fabled King Solomon s Mines This little known chapter of Australia s eventual discovery is enlightening on many levels, but the reader s journey isthan just one of knowledge this is an engrossing tale, told by a master of inventive description Despite frequent forays backward in time there is always just enough information to prevent us from getting lost in the narrative and the writing style, bordering at times on poetry, propels the story briskly along Purgatory is a strong book the vocabulary is challenging the author does not talk down to us and the story itself is forceful and uncompromising Those of sensitive disposition be warned, it takes us to some dark places, strongly reflecting the brutal times in which it is set But the hardness is softened by the perceptiveness with which each individual character is brought to life upon the page their incisively portrayed thoughts and actions showcase insightful observations of human nature in its myriad forms In order to fully enjoy this book, I found it worthwhile to suspend my scepticism about astral travel, since this is central to the story I also found it enlightening to immediately commence re reading from the start, thus finding new depths to the work, including the subtly laid clues to the final reveal At that point the reader will note that there is an element of internal inconsistency in the plot, but will need to make their own judgement whether this is a significant distraction or just an unfortunate consequence of the book s complexity Being the first part of a trilogy, Purgatory The Terra Australis Incognitanecessarily leaves us with Sarmiento s quest unfulfilled, although Val and we have finally achieved some enlightenment I look forward eagerly to the sequels becoming available, to continue this fascinating journey, and in the meantime I have also started on some of Paul Adkin s other works I do hope that you will enjoy doing the same.Andrea FisherMelbourne15 July 2012 Purgatory well what can I say This book is astounding It demands the Reader work through so many levels, levels filled with so many
