I am a big fan of the historical naval fiction genre I prefer a littlenaval and a reflection of historical fact However I thought this was a great story and a enjoyable read A coming of age story that shows the importance of honor, faith and taking a stand for what you hold dear Got it on loan with kindle prime, what a great deal I am really looking forward to a sequel. Black Dragons is a great read, and I highly recommend it for anyone, especially for young adults and for home schoolers The author makes very effective use of the main character s perspective, heightening the suspense by only allowing us to see and hear what the main character does The story draws you in to the hopes, fears, and difficult decisions of a young man thrust into great responsibility during a tumultuous time in American history Though the story starts in the American colonies, the Black Dragons is a great read, and I highly recommend it for anyone, especially for The story draws you in to the hopes, fears, and difficult decisions of a young man thrust into great responsibility during a tumultuous time in American history Though the story starts in the American colonies, the bulk of the action takes place in the Caribbean, and I found my curiosity aroused about the history of the region by the author s descriptions of the island of Saint Croix and its history I found the story very satisfying and am looking forward to its continuation in further books I hope that it sells well enough to be worth publishing in paper as that would make it easier to share with some home school families that I think would really find it inspiring Normally, when faced with a self published book, I m wary Many self pubs end up being poorly written with poor plots, faced with a self published book, I m wary Many self pubs end up being poorly written with poor plots, poor editing and really only good in the writers mind When said self pub book is labelled christian fiction, I begin to really worry When someone feels the need to label something as a religious fiction it s often because the book comes across as preachy, sacrificing plot and characters to use the book as a pulpit This book, thanks be to the Author, dodges both pitfalls easily It is well written, exciting and compelling Further, it s christian backbone adds to the plot, is a part of the characters and not once comes across as preachy No, this book manages to skip past these potential problems with ease to provide us with a great, solid Three Star tale.Plot Four Stars This whole plot is about an idea, an idea that for the time was so alien, so profoundly wrong that all that heard of it turned against it It s a tale of two boys who grow up on a plantation where blacks and whites are treated the same, where the black workers are trained in warfare and where, when the time comes, they march out to wage said war a war which never stops. Before I wax lyrical about this plotline, I will bring up the two faults I had with it First, the idea As great and as grand as it was, I can t believe that it would have been allowed at all at the time I don t know much about history in the america s, but this idea seemed way ahead of it s time with little historical knowledge there to back it up I grant that Frederikisted did emancipate slaves, but only a century later when they rose up This however, was a very small fault Secondly, and again it s a small fault, was the very beginning For about the first 20% stupid kindle, how many pages in that is I have no idea I was constantly waiting to be returned to the present, aboard the French ship For me this tainted the very beginning, as I was never fully invested in it An easy fix would have been, in my humble opinion, to make the scene aboard the French vessel a prologue It would have made the distinction clear, and could easily have been completed by an epilogue instead of the current ending But, as I said and really want to stress, that s nit picking This was a brilliant tale that swung from action to intriguie, tension to joy all with a pace that meant you were swept away And when I say swept away, I really do mean swept away I read this ebook, binary cover to binary cover, in a few, but fun, hours James and Bode partake in a defensive skirmish at a local plantation, then find themnselves in the employ of the British Army, before becoming sailors, then capturing Frederikisted against the odds, before holding it against the Dutch and, finally, the English after the war for independence starts up, leaving them with what can only be described as a city state This whirlwind explores the friendships between the characters, the racial differences relations and christian morals in such a purely entertaining way you can almost see the incredible action unfolding before your eyes Characters Three Stars James was the main character protagonist As a white boy raised on an racial neutral plantation he is firmly pro equality, fighting honourably for his beliefs against what he rightfully sees as wrongful oppression Sometimes this can come across as naieve though at first it made sense, adding to the shock and drive for him especially two thirds of the way in when he is still acting shocked at other white men s treatment of their slaves reacting like it was news to him everytime was bit wearing But, mostly, he was a great solid character who you couldn t help but like He was sensitive to a fault especially over so relatively few casualties but was immensely loyal, driven and fair Treating everyone around him in a perfect way, never once lowering himself to anything but honourable behaviour For once, this lack of a negative qualities wasn t bad some characters can be depressingly perfect and nice but actually came across as sincere and likeable Next to James, the rest of the cast fade in comparison, but are still some brilliant creations that manages to bring to life such a great tale Bode was aable, realistic version of the idealisitic James Everything about him was the perfect foil to James, and their friendship as a result rang true and really gave the whole book that little bit extra The father was well written and managed to ably convey that sense of justice to his son well you could see the goodness in him and it helped put into context James, making him that all therounded character However, I would have liked to have seenof him and hope his role is greater in the next book Captain Donovan was also well written, but I felt that he came around to James thinking way to easily and gave up any pretense of command with too little fuss a bitwill to stay in charge would have been nice, with James able to win him around bit by bit And the last character I shall mention is Rebecca, the love interest Apart from a brief discription there wasn t much there to know about her James and her s moments together though were great, and she added that much needed factor the plot was missing something personal to fight for love Once again, like the father, I would like to see her character expounded upon in the next book as she has so much promise The rest of the cast come and go pretty frequently, but for all their briefness they are well written, believable characters and their interactions with the main cast are brilliantly done If only all debut authors esp self published ones could write characters this well Writing Three Stars You could tell that this is early in the authors writing career The writing wasn t as refined as it could be, and the minor fault I found in the beginning was bugging However, none of this could hide the talent that was there He managed to craft a compelling, exciting and moving tale If he can keep this up, and polish off that talent, then I don t think it will be too long before an established publisher takes a look.Oh, and I thought the maps were well placed and helped flesh out the plot and scene really well Too many authors can be quick with maps and images to the detriment of their book, but here it was spot on Overview Three Stars A self published ebook labelled as christian fiction What could so easily have been poor writing, plot and characters turned out to be a great little gem With the potential it showed, I can t wait to see what else the author can produce Have Fun Reading The Revolutionary war from a different perspective..this is an ntriguing story of Southern plantation owners, honor and the integrity to do what is right Not always aligned with the King and his soldiers. Most of the story takes place on 1770s St Croissant, a Dutch colony at the time Good story line , well defined characters.A fun read. A friend recommended this book and mentioned that it was not what they expected, but better, so I took a chance and read it They were right There are a few areas that reveal that this is the authors first novel, but the story, the character development, and the style it was written in made it a fun and exciting read It s a great book for all ages, it has a solid spiritual message intertwined, and a great ending A fun story and I look forward to future novels from this author.
